How Has Project Advisory Helped Improve Project Outcomes?

I was discussing a project recently where a number of small challenges gradually developed into larger issues, and someone suggested that early Project Advisory support might have helped identify potential risks before they affected the overall project. I have never worked with that type of guidance myself, so I am curious whether bringing in outside advice early really improves decision making or if strong internal planning is usually enough. I would really appreciate hearing real experiences about what aspects of project advisory provided the greatest value and whether you would choose the same approach on future projects.
